The short version
- Specify the reference price and denominator whenever you report a percentage.
- Match the item variant and inspect attributes before comparing listings.
- Keep an appraisal separate from an available purchase price and a seller's net receipt.
A markup exists relative to a named reference
Use markup to mean the amount by which the compared price exceeds a stated reference, divided by that reference. Record whether the reference is a Steam buyer price, a cash marketplace listing, an actual sale or an appraisal. CSFloat's appraiser explanation discusses reference pricing across real-money markets and warns that its estimate may differ from an eventual sale. It does not provide a guaranteed price for your item.
Choose the reference before looking at the percentage badge. If your question concerns the cost of buying with cash, a comparable cash purchase quote is a useful starting point. A Steam benchmark can be retained in a separate column, but label its wallet basis. Otherwise a large advertised discount may answer a different question from the one you intended to ask.

Compare the actual skin, not just its weapon name
CSFloat's official tools description lists conditions such as float value, paint seed and stickers. Its appraiser launch post also describes limits to the attributes the model then predicted. These sources establish why an item-level check matters; the older posts do not establish today's complete feature coverage or a current premium for any attribute.
Make an item record with weapon, finish, exterior, StatTrak or Souvenir status, and available float, pattern and sticker details. Mark missing fields as unknown. For a specific physical instance, retain its inspect information or listing identifier. For a broader comparison, define an acceptable range in advance. A higher price for a different variant cannot be isolated as platform markup without further evidence.
Suppose two listings share a finish and exterior name but only one documents a particular pattern. Compare their attributes first, then decide whether the cheaper listing answers your purchase requirement. This avoids treating a feature you actually want as an unexplained fee, while also avoiding an invented premium simply because a seller describes an item as rare.

Worked example: 10% markup does not reverse to 10% discount
These are hypothetical quotes for equivalent items in the same currency, invented solely to explain arithmetic. Let the reference purchase price be 80.00 units and the compared listing price be 88.00. The difference is 8.00. Dividing 8.00 by the 80.00 reference gives a 10% markup. Dividing the same difference by 88.00 gives a 9.09% discount when describing the reference as cheaper than the listing.
Now suppose a separate fictional service advertises that its 88.00 cash price is 20% below a Steam reference of 110.00. That percentage is arithmetically correct: 22.00 divided by 110.00 is 20%. It does not contradict the 10% markup against the 80.00 cash reference. The denominators and transaction systems differ.
Write both results with their labels: 20% below the chosen Steam benchmark, and 10% above the chosen cash benchmark. Neither figure predicts resale proceeds or establishes the item's future price. If the 80.00 listing is stale or concerns different attributes, the cash comparison becomes provisional until a suitable reference is available.

Compare the cost of acquiring the item
A marketplace price and a checkout total need not be the same field. Steam documents fees displayed before purchase. For an external quote, separately check any funding, purchase and currency-conversion charges, and whether they are already included. Do not apply a remembered percentage without confirming its base and payment method.
Continue with invented numbers: quote A lists the item at 80.00 but adds a 4.00 funding cost, for 84.00 paid. Quote B states 83.00 with all purchase charges included. Under those assumptions, B costs 1.00 less to acquire the equivalent item despite its higher listing price. If either quote omits a required charge, stop at a partial total instead of declaring a winner.
Ask what explains the difference
SkinCashier identifies low volume and unstable pricing as reasons its valuations may be lower. ShadowPay says its prices reference several markets and that a service fee is included in price reduction. These are operator-specific explanations. They do not establish that every observed difference is a commission or that every quoted item remains available.
Before drawing a conclusion, retain the matched attributes, quote times, reference type and final purchase cost. Request an explanation for any unresolved adjustment and record whether the answer changes the valuation or adds a charge. This article compares acquisition prices; the cashout-fees guide separately examines what a seller receives. Mixing those endpoints can manufacture a supposed markup that is only a change in perspective.

Questions & answers
Does an appraisal establish what I can sell for?
No. CSFloat describes its appraiser as predictive. Treat an estimate as a reference with limitations, and keep actual offers or completed sales separately labeled.
Can I compare skins using only the finish name?
That may omit relevant differences. Record the exterior and available instance attributes, then explain any mismatch instead of treating the price gap as markup alone.
