The short version
- Record the destination of value alongside its amount and currency.
- An asking price, an appraisal and an available offer are different kinds of evidence.
- There is no documented universal exchange rate between Steam prices and cash prices.
Steam Wallet value has a specific destination
Steam's Community Market FAQ says purchases and sales use Steam Wallet; sale proceeds cannot be withdrawn to a bank, another Steam account or a third-party account. Its confirmation page distinguishes the buyer's cost from transaction fees. A visible listing price therefore needs two labels: who pays that amount, and what the seller receives.
For your own records, use columns such as buyer total, seller wallet receipt and currency. Do not enter the buyer total into a cash column. If you already plan to buy a game through Steam, wallet credit may serve that purpose. If you need money outside Steam, the same credit does not meet that requirement, however attractive the headline price looks.
A balance on another website also needs a label
External services define their own balances. CaseHug's account guide distinguishes claiming a skin on Steam from selling it for platform balance. ShadowPay's FAQ distinguishes deposited balance from proceeds obtained by selling skins, and describes a hold before seller proceeds become available. Neither a dollar sign nor the word balance establishes immediate access to cash.
Ask what created the balance and what the next permitted action is. Was it a deposit, an internal item sale, a completed marketplace sale or a promotional credit? Then record whether the proposed amount is spendable credit, held proceeds or an eligible payout amount. Leave any undocumented conversion or withdrawal condition unresolved; do not fill the gap with another site's rules.

Different prices need different evidence
SkinCashier says its pricing uses Steam market prices and may be lower for low-volume or unstable items. That is one operator's pricing explanation, not a formula for the whole market. CSFloat's published Float Appraiser explanation also identifies its output as a prediction rather than an assured sale price. Both sources support checking what a number represents before treating it as obtainable value.
Distinguish an owner's asking price from a buyer's offer, and both from a model estimate. A useful comparison records the item variant, quotation time and whether someone is actually offering to transact. One unusually high listing cannot establish that another quote is unfair. Equally, an appraisal badge cannot settle whether a particular collector will pay extra for the item you hold.

Worked example: three amounts, three destinations
This example is entirely hypothetical; its prices and deductions are invented. Assume the same skin would produce USD 100 of seller proceeds in Steam Wallet. A fictional cash service offers USD 78 after all stated charges. A fictional case site would exchange its internal item entry for 110 platform credits, which this example defines as spendable only on that site. These are three alternatives, not three balances received together.
The cash quote is USD 22 below the wallet receipt, or 22% relative to USD 100. That arithmetic describes this comparison only. It does not show a 22% commission, a universal cash discount or an opportunity to earn the difference. The 110 credits cannot enter the dollar calculation because the example provides no cash redemption right or exchange rate.
If the objective is a hypothetical USD 60 Steam purchase, the wallet outcome would cover it and leave USD 40 there. If the objective is an external expense, only the stated cash outcome addresses it directly. This is a comparison of usefulness under chosen assumptions; it does not recommend selling the item or moving value through extra transactions.

Keep the comparison tied to its assumptions
Save the quotation date, item details, value destination and any outstanding conditions together. If you have only an estimate, write estimate. If a service has not confirmed an available payment route for your account, write availability unknown. Do not silently replace a wallet receipt with a buyer-facing price when updating the comparison later.
Steam's trading advice also says its trade interface cannot transfer money or Wallet credit. A message inside a skin offer is therefore not evidence of payment. Keep the external order record separate from the Steam item record, and use the site's documented payment status to assess the cash side. This guide defines value; the related cashout-fees guide handles detailed deductions once a valid cash quote exists.

Questions & answers
Is a Steam price a guaranteed cash valuation?
No. It describes a market using Steam Wallet. Obtain a separate cash quote and identify its conditions before comparing it with wallet proceeds.
Should every difference from Steam be recorded as a fee?
No. First identify the price basis. SkinCashier describes valuation adjustments; your comparison must distinguish a different valuation from an explicitly charged fee.
